Welcome to the Batesville High School Faculty & Staff Book Club.

The 21st century job market demands that our students be able to read a variety of texts, to think deeply about  texts, and to respond to texts in thoughtful ways.

The goal of our book club is to unite teachers, administrators, and staff in a reading platform where we can model active reading strategies  (active reading  PowerPoint) for our students and improve literacy.

In the process, we will have fun, get to know each other better, and pick up some technology tidbits!

Interesting Literacy Facts

The 2002 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) exams highlighted alarming needs in high school literacy:

  • 26 percent of high school seniors were reading at "below basic" levels.
  • In international comparisons of reading performance, America's 11th-graders score close to the bottom.
  • "Many high school graduates enter college unprepared in reading. Approximately 25 percent require remedial reading courses. In community colleges, that number ranges from 40 to 60 percent of freshmen, and 25 percent of these students leave school without graduating. Many drop out because they cannot read well enough to do the course work" (Us Dept of Ed).
